2010 Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting Notes

May 04, 2010 By: webmaster Category: Warren Buffett

Every year value investors are inundated with notes from the annual “Woodstock for Capitalists.”  I have read many blog posts, notes, and accounts of the weekend.  My friend Ben at The Inoculated Investor has posted what I believe to be the best/most complete notes I have seen this year.

Click here to see Ben’s notes on the 2010 Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting.

Thanks, Ben!

Lunch With Warren Buffett

February 24, 2010 By: webmaster Category: Guy Spier, Mohnish Pabrai, Warren Buffett

I am extraordinarily fortunate to be able to count Guy Spier of Aquamarine Fund as one of my personal mentors.  In 2006 Guy, along with Mohnish Pabrai of Pabrai Funds, won the annual charitable auction for lunch with Warren Buffett. This year’s lunch took place yesterday in Manhattan.

Obviously one can learn much by studying Guy as an investor.  One can learn even more by observing how Guy absorbs various mental models and incorporates them into not only his investment style, but also into every aspect of his being.  I believe that Guy exemplifies the term intellectual curiosity.  In a recent interview with Betty Liu of Bloomberg, Guy discusses some of the lessons he took away from his lunch with Warren Buffett.   Click here for the interview.

Warren Buffett also mentioned Guy and Mohnish in his interview with Betty Liu.  Click here for the interview.

News from Columbia Business School:

…tomorrow Columbia Business School will host businessmen and philanthropists Warren Buffett, MS ’51, and Bill Gates as part of our practice of bringing influential business leaders to campus to share their insights. The event promises to be lively, with students able to ask questions on these icons’ ventures, philosophies and views on business. The exchange will be filmed by CNBC for global broadcast under the title “Warren Buffett and Bill Gates: Keeping America Great.”  In the United States it will air on Thursday, November 12 at 9 p.m. ET; in Asia on November 13 at 1200 SIN/HK; and in Europe on November 15 at 13.00 CET.

Be sure to tune in!

Next, I added two articles under Professor Bruce Greenwald.  The first article is a recent interview from Advisor Perspectives titled “Bruce Greenwald on Structural Problems in the Economy and Unemployment.” The second is an older article from Columbia Business School Alumni Magazine, Hermes,  titled “The Good Life:  How Managers Made the Modern World.”

If You Could Have Lunch With Anyone…

June 26, 2009 By: webmaster Category: Guy Spier, Mohnish Pabrai, Warren Buffett

This past Wednesday, hedge fund manager Zhao Danyang dined at Smith and Wollensky’s in Manhattan with Warren Buffett.  Danyang paid $2.1 million for the opportunity to have lunch with his hero, over 3x more than it cost the 2007 winners.  Proceeds from the lunch go to benefit the Glide Foundation.

This time last year two of my mentors, Guy Spier of Aquamarine Fund and Mohnish Pabrai of Pabrai Funds, along with their wives and Mohnish’s two daughters, sat down for lunch with Mr. Buffett.   Below are two great interviews where each investor reflects on the time they spent with Warren.  I find it interesting that their memories have little to do with investing, and instead focus on ‘general lessons for life’.

“That’s One Expensive Buffett” – an American Public Media audio interview with Mohnish Pabrai.  (thanks S.F. and NoiseFree Investing)

Betty Liu of Bloomberg Television interviews Guy Spier outside Smith and Wollensky.

For more on Guy and Mohnish’s experience see the article Guy wrote last year for Time Magazine: “My $650,100 Lunch with Warren Buffett”.

(For more on Mohnish Pabrai see my interview with Mr. Pabrai when I was a student at Columbia Business School.)

2009 Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting

May 03, 2009 By: webmaster Category: Warren Buffett

To say that there is a plethora of information posted to the web each year about the Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting is a major understatement.  This year is no exception.  Luckily, each year George from Fat Pitch Financials posts the “Ultimate Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting Guide.” In the past, I have found that he has done an outstanding job of accumulating the most detailed, interesting, and useful articles/information about the weekend that has become known as the “Woodstock for Capitalists.”

Click here for the “Ultimate 2009 Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting Guide”. A big thank you to George for compiling the annual list.  Be sure to check back frequently as additional resources are added for some time after the meeting.
